does any software work

Does any software work?

So far, all my graphics software and my label maker and my panorama, all fail to get to first base, if they even finish installing. So far, I am 100% failure on trying to get anything to run.
But, Vista itself is wonderful. What about this compatibility issue. I would hate to think that I will have to purchase all my software all over again. I have a lot of money tied up here. -- Ron

So far I have only tried runnning MSN messenger 8, Avast antivirus, and Spybot all of which work. AVG antivirus did not work... You should try out Irfanview as mentoned above if you havent before..fantastic freeware picture viewer, been using it for years and feel naked without it now :)

I have Acoustica Label Maker, Musicmatch, Nero 7, Canon Toolbox for my scanner, and ATI All In Wonder TV software, and Norton Antivirus, all of which do not work with Vista so far. I have tried with and without compatability mode with no success. I still have other software that I haven't tried yet. I did get Nero 6 basic burning software to work. Go figure.

Couple of things:
It has been said a couple of times that Vista doesn't like Norton. The software, not the old Honeymooners character. Probably something to do with the lawsuit.
2. It has already reported that Nero 7 does not work with Vista and that Nero 6.x does.
3. Neither of you mention whether you are testing the x86 or the x64 version of Vista. Keep in mind that if you are testing x64, it is a 64-bit architechture, meaning that most 32-bit software should load and run. However, and it's a biggie, if the software has a 16-bit installation loader, it will not install to an x64 environment.

The only things I have tried so far are Nero 7 Ultra which won't even install. Zona Alarm pro which Vista itself blocks as being incompatable.
However a really amazing thing is that AGENT 3.0 (newsreader) doesn't even need to be installed.
I just clicked on the agent.exe file and it opened up and ran just fine. So just made a shortuct to it so I could use the same installation in either Vista or XP.

Mark, I was just stateing the software that I have tried. No need to tell us all that some of the software was already stated elseware that it is not compatible. I'm sorry if my response offended you. And by the way i'm running x64.

Oh, it takes a lot to offend me. I guess I am just used to most people not bothering to seach the forum at all. Sorry if I came across as anything more than that.
Have a good one!

This is a phenomenon of multiboot machines and not unique to Vista.

I have tried PhotoPlus10, PagePlus11, Panorama2, (all from serif); Avery Label Maker, I think that's it so far. I wanted to see what others were experiencing before I went off willy nilly trying anything.
Based on the responses so far, I think I will dare to try some more things. -- Ron

Hmmm, what version of MusicMatch are you using? I have Ver 10.0 and it works just fine. I haven't tried many apps yet , but so far I have installed Eudora, (Eudora works fine, only glitch is it cannot set itself as the default mail program) Spy Doctor, Mirc and WinPatrol and they all work. --

I'm not testing Vista but I'd like to upgrade when it's released. The compatibility issues ( hardware and software ) seem a bit of a concern. I believe I read that you can install either the 32bit or 64bit version? Would it be possible to install a 32bit version and use that until 64bit updates etc are sorted out? If so , how is the 32bit version performing and is there anything in the licence agreement to prevent 'upgrading' to the 64bit version at a later date using your own copy? TIA

You can install both (in separate partitions). You cannot upgrade to 64bit. You will have to purchase it separately. It will be possible to run XP, Vista x86, and Vista x64 on the same machine (on three separate partitions of course).
